An offshore wind turbine with a capacity of 26 megawatts (MW) has been launched by the Chinese company Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) from Fujian province. This turbine is the largest in the world, spanning more than ten football fields, according to the industry publication OffShore Wind..
The company stated that the wind turbine is designed for areas with wind speeds of at least 8 m/s and is highly resistant to typhoons and corrosion.
The center of the turbine stands at a height of 185 meters, which is equivalent to a 63-story building, while the diameter of the rotor blades exceeds 310 meters.
The wind turbine can generate 100 GWh of energy annually, assuming an average wind speed of 10 m/s.This would power approximately 55,000 homes.According to DEC, a single such turbine could lead to a reduction in carbon emissions by 80,000 tons.
In June, DEC installed an 18 MW offshore wind turbine, which can power nearly 36,000 households, according to the company.
Another Chinese wind turbine manufacturer, Mingyang Smart Energy, has installed a turbine in Hainan.According to Mingyang, the turbine is designed for global installation in regions with medium to high wind speeds, making it particularly suitable for areas prone to typhoons.
